Meetings 7:30 PM; Second Thursday

you are receiving a hard copy of this newsletter and have an e-mail address,
please send that address to
President’s Corner
Here it is
March already, which means we only have three more meetings before the summer
break. With spring and summer activities approaching, we only have a couple of
months to get a good jump on turnings for the fair.
It is much
easier to build up a supply over a period of time, than to wait until the last
minute. This is a joint effort, and any tunings large or small are appreciated.
You can bring them to the meeting, present them at show and tell, and leave
them with Vice-President, John O’Neil, who will store them until the fair,
See you at
the Mach meeting
Ron Hudson.
President
Hudson called meeting to order at 7:30 PM

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Club was
informed that only club members belonging to the AAW are covered by AAW
insurance.
Barb Berger
has several boxes of assorted cut-offs to donate to folks for use on projects
for this year’s Erie County Fair. Here is a chance to show your creativity and
help a good cause.
Rich Mialki
reminded the club about the April Don Geiger Demonstration and the great raffle
prizes to be given away. He said there would be lots of them at the demo.
March Demo:
Kurt Hertzog on sharpening tools and showing the results of sharp tools.
Bob
Weisedel in formed me that he still has 5 shirts that have not been picked up
yet. He will bring them to the March meeting if you haven’t pick up your order
yet.
Old Business
Small
discussion about Summer Family Picnic took place. Due to the low attendance at
the meeting further discussion of the event take place at March meeting.
Am
increase in dues was once again brought up. This will be discussed and voted on
at the March meeting.
An idea to
save a few dollars was suggested by Rich Mialki. The members that do not have
e-mail could be given an option of paying an additional $5.00 a year to cover
the cost of the mailing or to opt out of being sent a newsletter each month.
This will be brought up again at the March meeting
New Business
It was brought to the attention of the members present that an effort was
being made by a group called “Carving for a Cause” to distribute lumber from
the October Surprise storm. This lumber would be given to volunteers to turn
and donate back to the organization, which will in turn display and /or sell
the items. The proceeds would b used to buy trees to replace the lost ones.
This is not just for turners, but also furniture makers, carver of all
disciplines, and wood artists in general. More information, as it becomes
available, will be given. Rick Crowe said he would look into it.

Miniatures by Rick Mialki. You can tell Rich has done lots of these by his confidence
and speed at which he turned several small goblets, one which with a captured
ring. This was a very informative and entertaining demo. Thanks Rich for an enjoyable
demo.
A number of
people wanted to know where Rich purchased the Mini drill Bits. He has informed
me that the 20 piece set, #61 thru 80, was purchase from Woodcraft’s catalog.
The part number is 04X73 and the price was $4.99.
ELMER’S CORNER
From Jake
Debski:
When
turning bowl, you can use a long glue stick to check the curve and form of the
turning. Lay it on the outside of the turning and it helps visualize the shape.
If you want
you could use this for the Corner. http://www.beaverpondstudio.com/Log_Jig.html
Several folks have asked me where I got the idea from. I just recently took the
time to locate it again.
Or this makes for interesting, if somewhat long, reading. http://www.woodturningvideosplus.com/wax-finishes.html

submitted,
