WNY WOODTURNERS II
Meetings 7:30 PM; Second Thursday
President’s
Corner by John O’Neil
Hello to
all
I wish to
thank those who have donated items to the Club for sale at the fair. The need is great so bring your items to the
show and tell and then place them in the donation box. At this time we have about 30 turnings and
our Club should have several thousand items if we expect to raise the same
amount of money for the Make a Wish Foundation as we did last year.
Please
don’t forget that we also need turnings as gifts for the school personal in
June. That’s just three meetings away
and remembers that it’s the generosity of the school that allows us to meet
there at a price that can’t be beat.
The
following Symposiums have been announced:
The Yankee Woodturning Symposium to
be held June 1-3 at
Register early as the fee increases
from $135 to $150 on May 1st and will be $165 at the door. For details see our website www.yankeewoodturningsymposium.org;

application see our web site at www.ovwg.org (please note that the on-site motel is
sold out, lodging on-site is limited to dormitory style accommodations only)
***We
are looking for attendees who would be interested in being what we call
"guest demonstrators". Guest demonstrators are attendees who
would like to demonstrate some aspect of woodturning
that they have mastered for 1 1/4 hours either before or after the
"pro" demonstrators. In exchange for their demonstration we
will pay for their meals on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, an $85 value.
If anyone is interested in being a "guest turner" have them contact
David Morrical,
President, OVWG, at 513-771-5205 or dmorrical@aol.com.
Please describe what aspect of woodturning you would like to demonstrate.
We have about 20 "guest" positions still available.”
Thanks
John
If,
you are receiving a hard copy of this newsletter and have an e-mail address,
please send that address to Kurt Hertzog at webmaster@wnywoodturners.com. You would then receive the newsletter via
e-mail each month. It would help defer some or the cost the club spends each
month.
President John
O’Neil called the meeting to order at 7:30PM. Our guest tonight was Dan Ott. Welcome to our new members: Bob Somer,
Jane Osborne, and Neil Holden.

Business
This pass month Jim Hilburger has held 3 workshops at Barb’s Barn to
teach how to turn all the items that he demoed at the Jan meeting. From what I
have heard, the people who attended these workshops have gained some very
valuable skills and techniques to improve their overall turning skills. Not to
mention the skills to make items that the club can sell at the fair this year.
I would like to extend a great big Thank You to both Jim and Barb for
taking the time and effort to offer this opportunity to our club members. I
know the prep work that goes into workshops like this is enormous, and they do
it willingly to better our members. We as a club are very fortunate to have
people like Jim and Barb who are willing to offer their time and skills.
This also goes for all the other members, who have offered workshops in the
past and I hope in the future to make our members better turners. The resource
of these people in our club alone is vast, and we should all be very thankful.
So with
that said I want to remind all members, that the fair is just around the corner,
and now is a good time to start to make items for that event. Bring them into
any meeting, and we will store them for the fair.
Jake
informed the group that arrangements have been made for two hands on classes on bowl turning for May to be given by Bill Grumbine at Barb’s barn and perhaps a May meeting demo.
Cost will be in the $1,100 to $1,300 range. Members of club 2 cost for the hand
on will be $30.00. The cost will be $40.00 for members of other clubs.
A motion
was ask to approve or disapprove. Jed Donahue made motion to approve, seconded
by Debbie Hachey. Motion carried.
Mike Hachey announced a Rochester Woodturner
sponsored demo. Cindy Drozda will be giving two hands
on classes at Woodcraft store in Henrietta on April 20 and 22. The cost to
non-members of the Rochester Club will be $150.00, per day. This price includes
lunch and materials. Cindy will also give non-hands on session on Saturday,
April 21 at the same location. The cost to non-RWS members is $50.00. This also
includes lunch. For more information on this, go to www.rochesterwodworker.org.

ELMER’S CORNER:
Here’s one
I found in Popular Woodworking, called “Vise Handle Bumpers.”
I’m sure
many of us have sported an occasional blood blister caused by a finger getting
slammed between the ball end of the metal vise handle and the vise’s lead screw
post. A cool, low cost solution is to slip a couple of O-rings or washers, such
as hose washers, onto each end of the vise handle. If you don’t have any
stashed in your junk drawer they can be found in most hardware departments for
less than the cost of a box of Band-aids according to Albert Moody of
