WNY WOODTURNERS II
Meetings 7:30 PM; Second Thursday
The President’s Corner by Kurt
Hertzog
With the coming of summer,
we have several items that we need to address. We need to collect the items we
donate to the school staff, arrange for our summer meeting locations, and get
going on our efforts for the Erie County Fair.
As we’ve done in past years,
we’ll collect turnings done and donated by our members for the school staff. We
have a great location to use and the school management and staff is great to
us. The donation of turnings is only a small “thank you” for their hospitality
and kindness. Please bring in something you’ve turned to donate to the cause.
We’ll have a display of the donations at our June meeting (the 8th).
While all of the donations are “winners”, we’ll have a mini contest of voting
and award three prizes of $35 each. Bring in something you’re proud of and you
could go home with bragging rights and 35 in cash.
Our usual meeting location
at the school is closed for the summer. We like to offer a meeting during July
and August, even if they a more lightly attended. Some of us are year around
turners. For many years, Barb and Jed have offered their homes as meeting
places. We certainly appreciate their kindness. I would like to see if we have
other opportunities so we don’t have to impose on Barb and Jed each year. We
really don’t need a huge shop. If someone has enough room to handle the 15 or
20 folks who usually attend, we’d be in great shape. We need someplace to park
and some cover in case of rain. If you have the capability to be our host and
are willing to, let me know. We may explore meeting in one of the parks at a
pavilion.
At our last meeting, I was
soliciting a volunteer to help co-chair the Erie County Fair effort. For many
years, Lyle Foell, Jim Hilburger,
and Bob Ball have been the mainstays. Not only have they been the organizing
group but also the real workhorses putting in huge amounts of time at the fair.
We’re giving them a rest and need to have one member from each club to
spearhead the organizing, staffing, and stock solicitation efforts. Steve Imerese has volunteered to do it for club 1. We need a
volunteer to help Steve. The fair is rapidly approaching and we’ve got to get
going on our planning efforts. Last year (and for some years in a row), we
raised over $6000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of WNY. It’ll take a big
effort to continue at that level. If you can help and work with Steve, let me
know. The Fair will run from Wednesday, August 9 to Sunday, August 20. Put the
dates on your calendar so you’ll be able to help staff the effort.
Thanks,
Kurt
May Demo: Jim Meier will do a demo on
alternative chucking. You don’t have to have an expense chuck to turn.
Jimmy Clewes Demo May 6 & 7: participants will have choices
of some of the following activities to work on: square turning, lidded boxes,
spindle turning or trouble spots ( a particular
tool or technique that you would like
help with)
A
reminder from Jake that you can start bringing in items for the school staff
that we donate to them every year as a thank you for letting us hold our
meetings at the Junior High free of charge. At the June meeting we will have
our contest for the best with prizes for the 3 best vote getters. All items
brought in will be donated to the staff.
Rockler’s are having a guild day on Sat. April 22 from 10 -2. They are also having more events coming up
one of them being Pen for Freedom on May 20. If you want to participate
in these events just show up on these days.
Tickets for the John Jordon demo in Oct. are available. See Kurt.
If you’re interested in a lathe John Walkden
has a Record lathe for sale. It includes
8 tools, a table with drawers, 2 doors with pull out
shelves. It’s 32” and will extend to
60”. Cost: $400.00 Number to call: 652-6683

Old
Business
At the toy Museum event in East Aurora,
The fair is
fast approaching. Start turning so we have enough items to
sell when Aug. rolls around. Bring them in and we’ll store them. A few
each month adds up.
We need a chairman
to coordinate the fair endeavor. Steve Imerse will chair
for Turner’s I and Rich Mialki has volunteered to co-chair
form club II if he can rearrange some other things.

Mike and Debbie Hachey presented a
very informative and thorough demo on pen turning. They covered this craft from the very beginning stage of
types of pens and parts, what bushings are and what ones are needed; types of
material to make pens out of; the tools needed; the jigs needed for drilling,
cutting blanks, putting the pen together; preparing the pen blanks; types of
glue used; turning and finishing. They also shared ideas for unique pens,
different jigs and many tips to make this fun and possibly a lucrative project.
Thank You Mike and Debbie for sharing your talent, skill and tips with us.
I ENJOY LIFE. THIS IS NOT A DRESS REHERSAL
If you have
a shop tip you’re willing to share with the club members, please e-mail it to
me so I can put it in the newsletter. Kummer210@msn.com
