WNY WOODTURNERS II
Meetings 7:30 PM; Second Thursday
Note: see below for directions to Jed Donohue’s where meeting will be
held.
The President’s Corner by Kurt
Hertzog
While we
may be in the doldrums of summer, there is a lot going on now and a lot more coming up. The Erie County Fair will be starting on
Wednesday, August 9th. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can still
do so. Check the website in the Coming Events page for the latest volunteer
signup schedule. You can also contribute by making and donating turned items
for sale at the event. Again, the Coming Events page has details on what is
needed and thought starter ideas.
The
September meeting will begin our fall season and we’ll be back at the school
for our meetings. Check the newsletter for details. We’ll be back in the
regular swing for meetings and demonstrations.
The
Woodworking Shows is planning on having an event in the area from September 29th
through October 1st. While we won’t mount a big fundraising effort,
the plan is to share a booth with the Turners 1 and have demonstrations. We can
use items made there as well as any left over materials from the Fair. The main
purpose to have the booth is to maintain continuity with the show so we’ll be
invited back in future years. It’ll also be a great chance to put out our
brochures and attract potential new members.
The October
meeting will be our annual elections. We currently have a confirmed candidate
for Vice President and Secretary. We need willing candidates for President,
Treasurer, and Webmaster. The goal is not to have “brinksmanship” and shame
someone into running. We’d like volunteers who want to take their turn serving
the club and have them lined up (with their PRIOR agreement) for nomination at
our September meeting. Give some thought to stepping forward. There is no
office that can’t be done well by a member of the club willing to put in a bit
of effort.
Our
November meeting is the annual auction. Start rooting through the shop for
excess that you’d be willing to donate to the club for auction. You can even
bring back the stuff you bought at the auction last year. Its
lots of fun and a great chance to get some good stuff at a good price.
Thanks,
Kurt
ANNOUCENMENTS
A welcome back to Mary Robbins. It was good to see you
again.
Jake
reported that he submitted the application for next year’s schedule to the
school and he delivered the items to the staff. They send a very appreciative
thank you to all who
turned the gift items.
It was
reported that Kurt is sporting a hidden horseshoe on him someplace. At the AAW
symposium this year he won a 24-36 One-way lather plus shipping at a drawing, and at a WOW dinner through a drawing he got to
swap a turning with Andy Wolf. Congratulation Kurt!!!! Could you tell the rest of us where you hide
that horseshoe and where we can get one?
Pepper Weinheimer, who also belongs to the Wood cravers club,
informed the club that the wood carvers are in need of some turners to make the
shafts of canes. The carvers are carving eagle heads for the cane head to be
given to war veterans. If you ant to help in this venture give Pepper a call to
see about dimension and etc.
Don Lamb
has a large microwave if you want one of the old large ovens for drying wood.
It’s free. Call Don at 648-0304 if you’re interested. John Chavanne
here’s a good one for you so you don’t have to sneak into your kitchen when
your wife is out.
Aug.
meeting will be held a Jed Donahue shop at 13556 Pritchard Rd, Springville at 7:00PM on Aug 10
Directions
to Jed’s shop:
From
Buffalo: Take 219 express to Springville; turn right onto Rt
39 toward Gowanda, Travel 1.8 miles; turn left onto Pritchard Rd; Jed’s place
is on the right about 0.1 mile.
We need items for the fair. Turn up some and Jake will store them. It
takes a lot of product to sell and raise $6000 or more for” Make a Wish”. So
get out on that lathe and make some things that we can sell at the fair for the
kids. Even though the fair will be going on at this time if you have items for
the fair bring them and we’ll get them to the fair.
If your are receiving a hard copy of this newsletter and have
an e-mail address, please send that address Kurt Hertzog at KHERTZOG@ROCHESTER.RR.COM. You would then receive notice of the newsletter
posting to the website via e-mail each month. It would help defer some or the
cost the club spends each month.

Old
Business
Rich Mialki gave a fair report. There
are still some slots open for working at the fair. So it is not too late to
sign up. We can’t have too many people for this event. If you still want to
help don’t be shy. Call one of the chairman: Rich Mialki, Steve Imerese, Al Shultz,
or Bob Ball, and they’ll tell when they need help and how to get passes.

John Bathrick gave a demo on his
portable saw mill. It is quite a set up and machine. Thank
you John for setting it up, and sharing this with us.
Here’s one I found in Handyman magazine. Power cord coilers. Got a shelf loaded with drills, saws, routers, and sander but can’t untangle the cords to safely pull one off the shelf? Try buying a pack of elastics ponytail holders and use them to keep the cords neatly coiled while tools are stored. Snugly loop the ponytail holder around the cord so it stays on the cord while you’re using the tool
